SHRINK TO FIT is one of the artworks I created in my first year of working with Crayola Crayons and it was a major breakthrough for me in developing technique. I still own the original.

I had 4 or 5 pair of Levi jeans spread out around my drawing table so I could take a closer look at the denim to see how it faded, examine the stitching, the different colors of blues, where they were worn the most and to capture that leather patch on the waistband.

I titled it SHRINK TO FIT because that is what we did back then when we bought a new pair of Levi Jeans, wash and wear them until they would shrink to fit!

COLORING LAHAINA

My first original of Maui was inspired by a visit to Kamehameha Beach in Lahaina, next to the harbor, which is one of my favorite places to surf. The lefts there can be pretty fast and fun for a regular footer like me. On this particular day I took several photos of the beach and water, then combined them with my imagination and crayons to create a piece of art that portrays what paradise "feels like"... the air in Lahaina is always invigorating and the atmosphere is alive with happy people everywhere. I can usually count on the sun shining and the weather being just perfect! I titled the piece LAHAINA and framed it in my signature floating crayon frame design with the title printed on the crayon wrapper serving as a nameplate for the artwork. Ah, the crayon! As simple as they appear, there’s a lot to them. First of all, just opening a new box of 48 or 64 still stimulate my eyes, nose and touch just as if I were a kid but mostly it affects my imagination! And to think, I don’t have to worry about wasting expensive paints or canvas so I’m free to experiment all that I want.
So, what do I do with all of this color? That’s my motivation…its like traveling to somewhere I would like to visit! Yes, and I know just how to get there with them. Maybe getting there wasn’t as simple as all that in the beginning but I have always been excited to think of the possibilities of what could be done with a box of crayons and paper. And then the hook, I can’t believe I did that with just crayons!

I started on this original Crayola crayon artwork in 2007 while Arnold Schwarzenegger was still governor and since completed as he just announced his return to Hollywood. For the second original in the Man In The Moon series, I wanted to incorporate the famous Hollywood Sign with the LA skyline but needed a famous face who was synonymous with the two landmarks but also needed someone (larger than life) to be the moon over Hollywood. Since I've always been a big fan of his Terminator movies, his rise to fame, like the rising moon over California gets Arnold Schwarzenegger the part for my next "Man In The Moon".

There are so many good titles for this piece that I haven't decided which one fits it best yet. I originally titled it "Hasta La Vista" but maybe it should be "I'll Be Back" or maybe "Terminator Moon" or maybe??? Any ideas?

Remember back in 1997 when the Hawaiian Moving Company profiled The Crayon Artist, Jeffrey Robert? I do, because I was so inspired by Robert's medium-defying use of Crayola (his brand of choice) that during my 'ohana's next trip to Longs, I used my hard-earned macadamia nut-picking money (how else do sixth-graders earn cash?) to buy a brand new 24-count box. There's something entirely exhilarating about a fresh box of crayons, each flat-topped cone tip still mold-perfect. Which reminds me of another piece of TV magic: Maybe being an '80s baby privy to the heyday of Sesame Street is the reason I agree with YouTube user mpizzle13, in that the keiki show's "Making Crayons" video is "PERHAPS THE SINGLE BEST PIECE OF RECORDED MATERIAL IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND!!!!!!!!!!!" Remember the joy of a brand new, 64-count, box of crayons? It was the Cadillac of coloring. An entire spectrum of possibilities; each brightly colored crayon even more enticing than the last. A box of waxy, colorful potential. If you were really lucky, that box even came with a fancy crayon sharpener on the back. Sweet.

That simple rectangular box housed a world of endless coloring possibilities.

Then you grew up. Crayons vanished from your life, abruptly and without warning.

But what happened? Why are crayons reserved only for children? Its really quite an injustice to a tool that, for many, is the very first exposure to artistic creation and expression.

There’s nothing wrong with crayons, but yet, once you reach a certain age, they’re universally frowned upon. And for what? Because they’re for kids? Poppycock. There are lots of things that are “for kids” that adults use on a daily basis. Heck, look at your smart phone. That thing is pretty much just a Gameboy with a phone in it.

Well, some intrepid crayon lovers (like myself) are bringing the crayon the love it truly deserves.

Enter the crayon artist.

A simple Google search reveals a number of fine artists who choose to create their art using only crayons. Finally! Our waxy, childhood friend is getting some love!

Some may call it a gimmick, and I get that… it’s easy to dismiss “fine art” that is created by something that is so closely tied to our childhoods. But before you judge, do you feel the same about someone who chooses to use watercolors to create fine art? Probably not.

From the past to the present Diamond Head, for me, is the most distinctive landmark on Oahu. Although my Crayola Crayon Surf Art Original “Waikiki” was completed last year, while actually living there, it carries with it a multitude of my memories and experiences of a lifetime. The magic of Waikiki! Yes, it still has that ambiance of years past where tourists can take surfing lessons from the Beach Boys, experience a canoe ride or just stroll the beach. And on any given night you will hear musicians playing Hawaiian music while talented Hula dancers perform under the stars of beautiful Hawaii!

This piece was originally framed in the traditional Hawaiian koa wood (and nothing wrong with that) but after contemplating the overall look, I decided that it would be even better to blend the nostalgia of Waikiki and the modern contemporary feel of my artwork with my new Floating Crayon and Plexiglas frame design.

I enjoy creating new frame designs to complete my art work. For my surf art, a conceptual frame design was created to compliment the aesthetics of surfing, reflecting the attributes of the transparent water, power, grace, skill and technical development of the sport. In the place of an ordinary matted and framed image, the artwork is encased between two transparent pieces of Plexiglas (one clear and one colored) then bordered by a deep metal frame. The colored transparent acrylic behind the art helps to extend an illusion of water and sky; clear, floating, translucent, and calming. The metallic metal frame evokes a sleek, sporty, stream line look reflecting the speed and advanced technology of modern day surfing. The overall design is now perfect and complete!

GETTING TO THE POINT (How to sharpen a Crayola Crayon)

Here’s a tip for all of you who want to step up your fine art coloring experience. Maintaining a sharp point on a crayon is fundamental for creating detail with crayons.
I find that when the crayon becomes blunt, I tend to get impatient and frustrated. When this happens, I begin to get careless and hurried! It is important to know when, where and how to use the point of a crayon. You might look at it as selecting the right brush or tool for your painting.

Some helpful hints for a sharp point:
1. Purchase a good (pencil or makeup) sharpener that cuts smoothly and does not get stuck because the opening is too small.
2.Turning the crayon slightly as you draw will wear the point evenly and cause it to last longer.
3. A sharp point will last longer with light hand pressure.
4. Begin coloring in the key areas where a fine point is needed, then move to the less particular areas.
5. To refresh or fine tune the tip, try dragging and turning the point on a scratch sheet of paper until the point is sharp again.

Constant sharpening will form a good habit and will ultimately develop a skill into an automatic response of a disciplined crayon artist.

Jeffrey Robert, the "Hawaiian" crayon artist, will be performing live from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Wyland Kona Oceanfront Gallery at 75-5779 Alii Drive. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist, view his crayon artworks of hula, surfing, beachscapes and "Children in Crayon" portraits and watch him transform a crayon into a paintbrush, reinventing the idea of what can be created with an ordinary crayon.
Art enthusiasts as well as families are invited to drop by the gallery to see Robert's artwork and share their favorite memories of creating art with crayons. Robert's Signature Brand Crayon Collectibles Gift Line features the title of the artwork printed on the crayon and framed with the artwork.
Robert was featured on "Good Morning America" with his friends at Crayola for their 100th-year celebration. He grew up on Oahu but spent most of his adult life in Texas. Since returning to Oahu, he has been showing his crayon art in the Wyland Galleries. Recently, he has been spending time on the Big Island where he is sharing this new fine art genre through the Wyland Kona Oceanfront Gallery.

Children look at crayons as their art medium (check out my first grade Christmas tree).
When visiting a public school, I asked a group of about one hundred first graders "who wants to be an artist when they grow up." Every one of them raised their hands!
Although that number will decrease drastically before they reach the fifth grade, I told them that I believe that all of us (the human race) are creative because God created us in his image and God is creative. Children are amazing little creatures and I hope that they will always remember that they are creative.

they impacted art supplies. We wondering how crayons changed the way you thought of art and if it made art any easier for you.

My answer:

Crayons have most certainly changed the way I have thought about art!

In the beginning and as it still is, the idea of drawing with crayons has a certain childhood charm about it that probably affects us all in a similar way. I think the crayon, for most of us, represents our first art experience with all the innocence and confidence of being a young creator of art. I still have those wonderful feelings when drawing with Crayola Crayons and in this way they serve to stimulate and motivate me

As far as making it any easier for me? Yes and No. There is an oxymoron attached to crayon drawing.

" Yes" because it's just a box of crayons and I'm just coloring! Crayons took the pressure off of comparing myself to some master artist.

"No" because the challenge for me was to technically make the crayon do what I wanted it to do, which has taken many years of trial and error to reach a satisfied level of control.

For the novice, yes it’s nice to just pick up a box of crayons and start coloring but there is a learning curve that can be very frustrating, depending on how much of a perfectionist you may be.

Aloha! I haven't blogged in awhile, took some time off for the holidays with family, caught up on some surfing and various projects but now it's time to get busy. I've been concentrating on my art, the next step...drop back by for the latest happenings in 2009!

Saturday night was another fun time at the Wyland Gallery Artwalk in Haleiwa. I enjoyed hanging out with my creative artist friends, gallery crew and some of the collectors. Always enjoy getting to know the people who drop by on the last Saturday evening each month. The Haleiwa Gallery is as laid back as the north shore; we had Heather Brown's bulldog puppy on a wild chase with Steve Power's sheltie! There was wine, beer and pupu's (snacks) and everyone had a great time.

Here is a sneek preview of the new art piece I was working on that night. It's a landscape ocean scene of the famous Waimea Bay which is known for its gigantic north shore surf in the winter months. But in the summer time, Waimea Bay is quite the opposite. I should have it completed soon so be sure to check out my website art gallery to view the finished work!

Philadelphia Phillies Center fielder & Maui 's own Shane Victorino is hosting a celebrity golf tournament in November to support the Alzheimer Association's Aloha Chapter. When I was approached by the Beverly Hills Sports Council to donate my art for the charity auction I was pleased to help the cause. I have had many individuals and organizations use my crayon art techniques as art therapy for their loved ones afflicted with Alzheimer's. I am donating a piece of original surf artwork to the event for auction along with my crayon art techniques kit. It promises to be a great event featuring celebrities, athletes, and people wanting to be involved in this worthwhile cause. Pali Lookout

Aloha. Its been a while since I have had a chance to talk story. I have been busy creating some new art that I am really excited about sharing with everyone. I did, however, get a chance to take a beach break out at Lanikai Beach this past weekend. We stopped at Pali Lookout to take in the view and had lunch at Maui Tacos, a lunch time favorite. I like to keep my camera with me and take lots of pictures when I am crusing the Island. You never know when there is going to be a great photo opportunity and a chance to capture something incredible. A recent trip to Lanikai served as the inspiration behind "Lanikai", an original crayon art piece of the Mokulea Islands. I am currently working on a surf piece inspired by another one of my photos taken at Kaisers during the big swell a few weeks ago. The water at Lanikai Beach is amazing, pictures really do not do it justice. It was a great chance to take a break, go for a swim and enjoy the day. Here are a few pictures from the trip. Enjoy.

I've Got That Country Feeling

I took a drive out to Haleiwa yesterday to deliver a commissioned piece of art to Wyland Gallery and visit a friend of mine Kyle Bernhardt. Kyle is a master shaper behind Country Feeling Surfboards, some of the most sought after boards in Hawaii. Unlike a lot of surfboard companies, Kyle's boards are completely custom. He hand picks the material, shapes, finishes, and even sells them himself. I have been surfing with a few of his boards over the past few months and have received numerous compliments on them. With the large swell this past weekend I really got a chance to see how they handle, I wish they made quality boards like this when I was growing up. My daughter's fiance has been using one of their hemp deck "green" boards. I think making surfboards that are environmentally friendly really go hand and hand with surfing and the ocean. I look for these "green" boards to continue to grow in popularity. After dropping off the boards I went by to see my sister, who lives in Haleiwa. She has the coolest German Shepard, Stevie, who fetches coconuts instead of tennis balls. I always enjoy spending time on the North Shore and with fall around the corner and winter not too far away I look forward to being out there a lot more in the months to come.

The Swell of The Summer

6 to 10 foot waves on the south shore! The largest swell of the summer. There seemed to be a buzz in the air as the forecast called for waves up to ten feet from Friday morning to Sunday night. We hustled down to the beach Friday morning expecting big surf and large crowds and for the most part we were not disappointed. Our usual spot, Threes, had well over thirty people waiting for a ride so we moved over to Paradise and Popular's, two surf spots near by. My daughter's fiance has been surfing for a little over a month now and was getting to experience the excitement of surfing larger waves for the first time, thanks to some peer pressure. After surfing I decided to head down to Magic Island and take some pictures of The Bowl. It was a sight to see. People headed out, others paddling in, everyone stoked. It's hard to describe the atmosphere and the intensity of the weekend but luckily I took a lot of pictures that help. Here are a few. I think I will head back out. Enjoy.

Wyland Gallery Waikiki

What a day for surfing! It was one of those days that doesn't happen often but when it does you have to take full advantage. The conditions were perfect, the water was glassy, the surf was amazing, and I had it all to myself... for about three hours. The highlight of the morning was a long wall I was able to hang five on, five toes over the board. It was a ride that seemed to last forever and something I haven't done since I left surfing years ago. Maybe it has something to do with school starting, but my morning surf outings have been especially peaceful. I did meet some cool people that day who were visiting from Australia and invited them, and their families, to the Wyland gallery where I would be drawing that night. The laid back aloha spirit of Hawaii makes it easy to meet new people even in a busy city like Waikiki. There was a great turn out at the gallery and I had a chance to visit with people from all over the world. Here are a few pictures of me at the gallery. Aloha to my new Aussie friend, Gary!

The Wyland Galleries of Oahu have turned into a home away from home for my art work. Recently my family and I were in Haleiwa for an art open house and dinner at one of our favorite North Shore restaurants, Cholo's. I always enjoy spending time on the North Shore, drawing and interacting with locals and visitors; Haleiwa is such a laid back environment for an artist or anyone trying to escape the fast pace lifestyle of the cities. The Gallery is located in a small town square layout just as you enter Haleiwa. 1. Choose three shades of Blue…Cerulean, Turquoise Blue, Sea Green.

2. Start at the horizon with the Cerulean, color the middle layer Turquoise Blue, and the water closest to the shoreline Sea Green.

3. Blend the colors together using your finger, dark to light.

Home work: [Capture a water scene] Take a quick break by visiting a local body of water. Do you live near an ocean, lake, river, creek, pond, or swimming pool? How about a water puddle (be creative). I have been surfing a lot the past few weeks. Recently I traded a piece of art work with a friend of mine for a custom nose rider surf board, the same classic style I grew up on. Growing up in Hawaii, there were days I remember staying out in the water all day. These were the days before 30 SPF sunscreen, leashes for your board, and shark warning signs. We would find a ride, (only a few of us had cars) chip in on some gas money, and load our surf boards onto the roof rack. After an all day surf session we would go to Kelly’s Diner for a bowl of fifty cent rice and brown gravy, (we ate nothing but slop in those days). While living in Texas, I put surfing aside for many years. When I finally moved back to Hawaii I was a little apprehensive about getting back in the water. I was not sure if it was like riding a bike, (I was surfer of the year in high school and had a reputation to maintain). I went out anyway despite my fears. Surfing was not how I had remembered. It seemed to be more hard work than fun that day. The next day my shoulders and neck were sore, my ribs hurt, and I felt a little discouraged. Then a day or two goes by and I start to get that itch. I was hooked again. Now I am back in the water every day, (if not every other day). I am back to my previous surfing form, well almost, and having as much fun as I ever. So if there is something you want to accomplish, maybe even get back into something you were once passionate about, don’t hesitate. Dive into it, you will be glad you did.

The Crayola 64 Box...50 years young

When Crayola came out with their 64 box, I was attending Pearl Harbor Elementary School in Hawaii and wow, so many colors, it was amazing! Little did I know that 50 years later Crayola would invite me to be a part of their 50th birthday celebration! I’m probably one of their biggest fans and have professionally shared and used their crayons to create photorealistic artworks. I truly believe that if the old masters had seen the 64 crayons, they would have considered them a high-tech palette in a box! So…even though today crayons are typically considered to be “just for kids“, I think coloring with crayons can be a great way to stay young at heart! Congrats and cheers to all my friends at Crayola!

SHAKE IT UP BABY - TWIST AND SHOUT

No, it’s not about the Beatles. Actually, it’s about using Crayola’s new crayons the TWISTABLES! Although they’ve been around for awhile, you may not be familiar with them unless you’re a kid or have kids that may use them. But believe me, they’re not just for kids! In fact they fit much better in my hand than regular crayons…they last longer…sharpen better…and don’t break! I use them all the time now. Crayola must have had us older boys and girls in mind when they came up with the idea. (I like to think that)

Crayola turned me on to twistables a while back when we did the “Good Morning America” show together for Crayola’s 100 year anniversary. And I’ve been using them ever since! I'm spoiled now and really love em. When drawing, I mix and blend the colors together to make a new color because they are limited in color choices. Of course it’s still fun and easy to use my regular stand-by box with over a zillion colors to choose from because some colors are just impossible to mix like “sea green” when I'm creating a beachscape. (I just love that color)

Anyway, for all of you who are "young at heart" and who still love to color or are addicted to the smell crayons - just keeping you in the loop!
